A Systematic Review of the Literature on Risk Factors and Protective Factors of Online Gambling

Online Gambling

Online Gambling is a form of gambling that takes place on computer or mobile devices. This type of gambling is gaining popularity in countries where it is legal. However, it can lead to addiction and financial ruin if not controlled properly. To avoid problems, it is important to know the warning signs of online gambling and seek help if you or someone you know is showing them.

To investigate knowledge on risk factors and protective factors of online gambling, a systematic literature review was conducted using three academic databases. The search was limited to peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2020. The PICO (population, intervention, comparison, outcome) framework was used. In the search for articles, keywords were entered such as “online gambler”, “risk factor”, “protective factor”, and “predictor” or “correlate”.

Although it is not possible to control all aspects of a person’s life, preventing online gambling requires setting boundaries and limits for time and money spent on the activity. It is important to avoid engaging in online gambling when feeling bored or stressed, and find healthy activities that can provide a sense of satisfaction without negative consequences. Some alternatives to gambling include exercising, practicing a hobby, or spending quality time with friends and family. It is also beneficial to identify what triggers you to engage in excessive gambling and to develop healthy coping strategies. In addition, people who struggle with addiction should consider seeking help through support groups and counseling services.
