Players make their bets in clockwise order. The player who bets first is called the bettor. The other players are called the callers. If a player bets, the caller is required to match the bet. Usually, the player who bets first is the active player.

Players must bet a minimum amount in the first betting interval. In some variants, a player can raise before the betting interval begins. In other poker positions, a player must make a forced bet. This type of bet is the opposite of a normal bet.

The flop is the first set of three cards that is dealt face up after the first round of betting. It is usually a straight flush, and it starts with the highest-value card.
