Lotteries are often criticized for encouraging addictive behavior by making people feel they can control their financial future by buying a ticket. In addition, there have been many cases where winning the lottery has ruined people\u2019s lives by leaving them with a huge debt and little to no income.<\/p>\n
The first known public lotteries were held in the Low Countries in the 15th century to raise funds for town fortifications and for the poor.
