The first state-run Lottery in America began in New Hampshire in 1964. Historians note that lottery participation was common in colonial America, and it continued to play a role in funding public works, including roads, canals, churches, colleges and schools.<\/p>\n
While the odds of winning the lottery are low, people continue to play because of the positive emotions they experience when imagining their own victory. This type of counterfactual thinking is common among gamblers, and it is also present in the case of lottery players, says Leaf Van Boven, professor of psychology at CU Boulder.<\/p>\n
