Lottery is an ongoing competition in which numbered tickets are sold for the chance to win prizes based on random selection. While the casting of lots for making decisions and determining fates has a long history (including several instances in the Bible), state-sponsored lotteries are considerably more recent, with the first recorded ones appearing in the Low Countries in the 15th century.
